Why rest can feel hard (and why gentle helps)

From psychology and nervous system science, we know that sleep struggles often aren’t about sleep itself.

 

When the mind stays alert — replaying, planning, or scanning — the body doesn’t fully stand down. That can show up as racing thoughts, a restless body, or waking during the night. Trying harder usually backfires.
